Intel Panther Lake will use 5th generation NPU

Intel will use a new generation of NPU in its Panther Lake processors, which should arrive in the middle of next year. The information comes from the company itself, through recent patch documents for Linux. The screenshot below was shared by the website Phoronix, which specializes in the open source operating system:

“This patchset adds initial support for the 5th generation Intel NPU that will be present in the upcoming Panther Lake CPUs.” This is what the text above says, in free translation.

This means that the Intel Core 300 – likely commercial name for Panther Lake – will use an NPU5. This information is interesting especially because of the leap in performance that the Lunar Lake NPU4 had in relation to the NPU3, present in the Meteor Lake generation.

While the third generation of Intel NPUs reaches 11.5 TOPS in estimated performance for AI, the NPU4 has already jumped to 48 TOPS. This is not only multiplied performance, but also the guarantee that any notebook with Intel Core 200V can be a Copilot+ PC.

If the NPU5 on Panther Lake processors sees a similar leap in performance, we will see a noticeable improvement in AI usability on Intel processors.
