Intel is preparing for a drastic change in the Gaudi accelerators it offers for AI. The company intends to pair Gaudi with HPC GPUs in a new product, which is currently codenamed Falcon Shores. However, unexpectedly, the company’s current Co-CEO has already warned that these first components will probably not be “wonderful”, adjusting the expectations of customers and investors.

The speech came from Michelle Johnston Holthaus, at the Barclays Annual Global Technology Conference. “We really have to think about how we go from Gaudi to our first generation Falcon Shores, which is a GPU,” said the executive. “And I’m going to tell you right now, is it going to be wonderful? No, but it’s a good first step.”

It’s certainly an unexpected statement when every company praises its new products as a “revolution” or something like that. Holthaus was pragmatic in explaining that, when implementing new technologies for the company, she prefers to have a new platform right away and evolve from it, instead of spending two to three years “standing still” developing the new product.

The executive also commented that she is betting on the longevity of AI, and the emergence of new opportunities in more areas of the segment. “Obviously, AI is not going away. Obviously training is, you know, the focus these days, but there are opportunities for inference in other places where there will be different needs, from a hardware perspective.” It seems, then, that Falcon Shores will target these “other places”.

Falcon Shores will set the stage for Jaguar Shores

Since Intel has already revealed its roadmap for the future of its Gaudi accelerators, we know that the next generation after the not yet released Falcon Shores will be called Jaguar Shores.

Combining this with Co-CEO Holthaus’ speech, we can speculate that Falcon Shores will arrive to prepare the ground before the company makes more solid bets on the new format. The company can be expected to work primarily on platform and software development, the area that has truly enabled NVIDIA’s current dominance over AI.

One way or another, we can also estimate that Intel is counting on a long-term plan to gain some space in the segment.
