One of the most well-known creations of generative AI is the hype. With the excitement surrounding the topic, investments in the area continue to grow, which results in an exponential increase in its infrastructure. Thus, we now have estimates that CO2 and other equivalent gases in data centers could triple in the coming years because of generative AI.

The information comes from the investment bank Morgan Stanley, so the research was actually done to highlight business opportunities for carbon capture companies. The company calculated emissions at different levels, from the installation of new data centers to the maintenance of them. The total was estimated at 2.5 billion tons of CO2 being emitted in the area.

That’s equivalent to 40 percent of the total annual carbon emissions from all U.S. industries. The bank predicts that construction of new AI facilities will increase from 200 million tons of greenhouse gases this year to 600 million tons by 2030.

Of the 2.5 billion tons expected in the coming years, roughly 60% of that would be generated just by the energy requirements of the servers needed for AI.

While many companies have set carbon neutrality goals for 2030, Morgan Stanley sees commercial opportunities for carbon capture companies. The firm predicts that the industry could receive $15 billion to $45 billion in investment.

Sustainability does not keep pace with advances in AI

The technology industry has always been a fast-paced industry, which makes it difficult for sustainability solutions to keep up. The boom in AI, especially generative AI, has further boosted investment in the field. The growth has been so great and so rapid that it has been compared to a new “gold rush.”

All this production has consequences for the environment. In addition to the increase in greenhouse gas emissions calculated by Morgan Stanley, energy consumption is also expected to become increasingly alarming. Not only that, but even the physical space occupied by data centers for different functions – not just AI – has caused concern.
