ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) is apparently already manufacturing DDR5 RAM chips en masse in China. The information is not from official releases, but comes after several products appeared for the end consumer that apparently used CXMT components.

As is normally the case with information coming from China, the news is based on observations from nearby media and publications on the internet. The ZDNet Korea website, for example, reports the opinion of experts, who speculate that CXMT produces domestic DDR5 chips with its G3 process, estimating an 80% utilization in manufacturing.

Analysts at TechInsights, however, believe that the components are already being made in a more advanced process, called G4. In any case, CXMT has the production capacity for a large volume of chips, which could impact the DDR5 market regardless of its use in manufacturing.

On social media, screenshots of advertising material from KingBank and Gloway, for example, circulate. Brands now offer 32GB DDR5 kits, and mention that the modules are “domestic”. CXMT is not mentioned, but it is thought to be the manufacturer as it is the most advanced DRAM manufacturer in China.

Manufacturing of DDR5 in China could impact the global market

At the moment we don’t know if CXMT intends to focus only on the domestic market with its DDR5 memories or if it intends to reach global customers as well. Both cases could have an impact on the global memory market, due to the size and volume of consumers in China.

If CXMT decides to export its components the impact is more obvious. An increase in the volume of cheaper memories “appearing” on the market could force better-known global manufacturers – such as Micron and SK Hynix – to lower their prices.

Related news:

If the manufacturer “stays at home”, things could still change a little. Products made entirely in China will probably be somewhat cheaper, and will reduce the volume of units that global manufacturers are able to sell in the country. If this volume is returned to the global market, it could also result in a decrease in prices.

Of course, other factors may prevent any truly noticeable drop in prices.
