A large list of some of the biggest technology companies belong to the newly incorporated consortium for UALink. These companies intend to work together to establish specifications to improve the interconnection between accelerators and switches in AI clusters.
“The UALink standard defines high-speed, low-latency communication for scalable AI systems in data centers,” explains the new consortium’s announcement. Upon incorporation, the following names appear on the list:
- AMD
- Intel
- Amazon
- Microsoft
- Meta
- Astera Labs
- Cisco
- HP
There are already nine companies participating in the UALink Consortium, and the organization announced its incorporation, extending an invitation to even more companies. Of course, each new member also contributes financially to the consortium.
“Interested companies are encouraged to join as contributing members to support our mission: establishing an open, high-performance interconnected accelerator for AI workloads,” said Willie Nelson, president of the UALink Consortium.
Interestingly, for such an AI-focused entity, NVIDIA does not appear among the incorporated members.
UALink 1.0 specification arrives this year
The consortium was incorporated with the announcement of the first version of its new specification, UALink 1.0. The standard establishes scalable connections with data transfer rates of 200Gbps per lane for up to 1,024 accelerators in a single pod for AI.
Related news:
The standard will be made available to members of the UALink Consortium later this year, and open for general review in the first quarter of 2025.
“The release of the UALink 1.0 specification in Q1 2025 represents an important milestone as it will establish an open standard for the industry, enabling AI accelerators and switches to communicate more effectively,” said Kurtis Bowman, one of the consortium directors.
On the organization’s official page, it is mentioned that UALink 1.0 will take advantage of the experience of the consortium’s core members, who have developed and distributed a “wide range of accelerators and switches”.
