Recent leaks about the Nintendo Switch successor point to significant changes to the console, including magnetic Joy-Cons and an official name: Nintendo Switch 2. The information was revealed by a Reddit user called “NextHandheld” and, more recently, was corroborated and “confirmed” in part by the website The Verge, which had access to photos and technical details provided by the leaker.

A Redditor named “NextHandheld” claims to have seen and touched a final retail unit of the Nintendo Switch 2. I’ve spoken to him and have heard and seen enough to think he may be legit.

We reported the original leak, before The Verge confirmed it, and according to the images shared, the new Switch dock features the same logo as the current model, but with the number “2” on the sidesuggesting that the official name of the console will actually be Nintendo Switch 2.

The dock specifications indicate the presence of two USB-A ports, one HDMI port, one Ethernet and one USB-C, similar to the current model. However, no additional significant features were identified.

The console should initially be launched in dark gray, followed by a white version and another theme based on a Nintendo game that has not yet received a special Switch edition.

New Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-cons may actually have hall-effect

One of the most talked about points is the possibility of the Joy-Cons using a magnetic system to attach to the console, replacing the physical rails of the current model. According to the leaker, there will be a noticeable magnetic click when attaching the controls and a larger button to release them.

I saw a photo of a dock with the same logo as the original Nintendo Switch, but with a 2 attached… the dock doesn’t seem to have more ports than the original – two USB-A, one HDMI, one ethernet and one USB-C probably used for the power block – he might have a different trick up his sleeve.

Additionally, the new Joy-Cons should use joysticks with Hall-effect technologywhich eliminates the wear-prone sensors present in the original model. This change could represent the end of the problem known as “Joy-Con drift”, common among Switch players and is definitely welcome.

If it’s real, Nintendo will be the first of the big three console manufacturers to include this technology in its standard hardware.

The Switch 2 will also feature a “U”-shaped rear support, which promises to be more robust than previous versions. There are indications that the console will have greater power when connected to the dock, with a 60W charger for the dock and 45W for the console.

Despite this, details such as compatibility with current model cartridges, graphics performance and launch titles remain unknown.

Although Nintendo has not yet confirmed this information, there are rumors that the console will be officially announced in January 2025. If this comes to fruition, it is likely that more details will be revealed soon, putting an end to speculation.
