Rambus registers first controller IP for HBM4

Rambus has announced that it has registered the first controller IP for HBM4. The company claims that its solution supports all the features of the new generation of memories, and is available for licensing to its customers. As always, the use of the technology for AI was a highlight of the company’s announcement:

“With large language models (LLMs) now exceeding a trillion parameters and continuing to grow, overcoming bottlenecks in bandwidth and memory capacity is mission critical to meeting the real-time performance requirements of AI training and inference,” said Neeraj Paliwal, executive director at Rambus.

“As the leading provider of silicon IPs for AI 2.0, we are bringing the industry’s first HBM4 controller IP to market to help our customers advance the performance of their high-end processors and accelerators.”

Some of the customers mentioned by Paliwal include Samsung, Siemens, Cadence and IDC. Representatives from the companies celebrated the news, highlighting the importance of the controllers in helping spread HBM4 and its adoption by more manufacturers.

Controller for HBM4 meets JEDEC specifications

Rambus highlighted that its new controller IP meets the specifications released by JEDEC for HBM4. Thus, the product supports speeds of 6.4Gbps, for example. In fact, the technology goes even further, and could reach up to 10Gbps, according to the company. The controller is also compatible with third-party PHY solutions in order to help in the creation of complete subsystems for HBM4.

As mentioned earlier, the Rambus controller for HBM4 is now available for licensing. Additionally, customers creating early access controller designs can now get started.

The development of the next version of HBM memories appears to be proceeding according to plan, with its launch in 2025 in the professional segment, especially products focused on AI.
