Well, the hearsay is over. Sony made official the PS5 Pro. Marking the company’s second action around something that is unlikely not to happen in future generations: the mid-period console, also called the mid-generation console.
The Japanese giant did this with the PS4, launching its Pro version, and now it has done the same with the PS5.
The build-up to this official announcement was extensively covered by the media, and you have followed many of these countless rumors here with us, both on Hardware.com.br as in our brother, the GameVicio.
This escalation began in 2019, a year before the launch of the PS5. At the time, it was rumored that Sony would launch the PS5 and PS5 Pro together, information that came directly from a Japanese journalist.
A strategy that would be similar to what Microsoft did, when it launched the Xbox Series S and X in parallel. But Sony didn’t go down that path.
The PS5 hit the market on November 12, 2020 and the PS5 Pro hits stores on November 7, 2024. This 4-year gap between products strengthened two schools of thought:
- Those who consider a more robust version of an initial console to be important, see the performance of the PS5 when handling some games,
- Those who consider this launch a huge rip-off for those who bought the PS5, since the jump between one and the other may not be that impressive.
Given the announcement of the PS5 Pro, the number of people who think like the second group has probably increased considerably. From the presentation, the PS5 Pro just looks like what the PS5 should have been, it doesn’t feel like something that is truly in a class above.
Everything may be different when the product is in the hands of players, when the reviews come out, but, based on what was demonstrated in the presentation revealed today (10), by Mark Cerny, the feeling of disconnection with what was expected was clear.
It is simply inconceivable that the suggested price of the PS5 Pro is US$ 699.99. Given what was shown in the presentation, this price is shameful and unjustified. Bringing it into a gamer’s dialect, 700 dollars is untankable!
It takes a lot of confidence and real belief in your product to launch this console at this price, and even more so being so far away from what could be the big selling point for it, the launch of GTA 6.
Given that GTA 6 will be released in mid-2025, if there are no delays, nothing, absolutely nothing at this point justifies a logical purchase for the PS5 Pro at this price. Not even the most optimistic and PlayStation fanboy should believe that buying this console in November is viable.
As a rule, the console still comes without a disc reader, it will be sold separately, as will the stand.
Cerny’s presentation seemed more like a sermon for those who have already converted to PlayStation, and who will work on rhetorical juggling to justify this product. But, in a more rational and less emotional assessment, the comparisons shown, even supported by its own upscaling technology, PSSR, do not deliver a leap that strengthens the narrative for a switch between the PS5 and the PS5 Pro. Perhaps it would be justified in a lower price range; at $700 it is laughable.
It will be interesting to see how Sony will work on public communication for the PS5 Pro in its upcoming presentations. The company will have to apply a kind of gamer sophism to show something that can bring some kind of reasonableness to the purchase of this product in the first months of its launch, especially for those who bought the PS5.
The discussion about the price gains an even more incredible context when analyzing the price in Dollars under the reality of a country that runs on Real. As of the closing of this article, Sony has not yet revealed when the PS5 Pro will arrive in Brazil and how much it will cost. Just in the conversion, pure and simple, without considering taxes, 700 dollars becomes R$ 3,949.
Obviously, the economic outlook, especially considering the interest rate crisis, can appear as a justification to try to explain the price of the PS5 Pro. On the other hand, since the dark times of the pandemic, many analysts mention that consumer behavior has changed. There is a tendency to analyze purchases more carefully, a more significant valuation of the money invested in something.
Considering this reality, and having Brazil as our reference for life, follow this idea of analyzing the purchase more carefully. You can definitely also come to the immediate conclusion that the PS5 Pro is not worth it!
Once the PS5 Pro is released, and the numbers and information about demand for the console are released, we will be able to see if Sony has managed to transform itself into the “Apple of video games”. Pushing all of its products to a loyal base that will buy without hesitation at any price.
