Given the availability and variety of titles already available on services that run games from the cloud, it is now perfectly possible to disassociate yourself from games that were made with the mobile market in mind.

AAA no bag

Just as the cloud makes it possible to run more demanding games in terms of hardware on machines that would not be able to handle them natively, it is also possible to enjoy certain AAA games on smartphones. The journalist Eduardo Marin, from the Mexican site Xataka Android, decided to do this test. Use the cell phone as a console for a week.

He says in his post that he has always been a fan of video games, even citing the SNES as his gateway into this universe. Given his attachment to consoles, Marín says he never really got addicted to mobile games. Given the rush of the week, and not being able to stay at home interacting with the console, he decided to bring the video game to his pocket device, his cell phone.

In addition to the cell phone, he also used the joystick Backbone One. Accessory that guarantees an experience closer to the gameplay of a portable console. And the connection used was 100 Mbps.

In his assessment, cloud gaming can offer a near-perfect experience when it comes to single-player campaign games. He cites Control, Alan Wake 2 she saga Yakuza. “These games do not rely on a perfect connection, as multiplayer options only require an acceptable response time to enjoy the combat and story”highlights the journalist.

Marín says that to use his phone as a portable console, he took advantage of the benefits of cloud gaming using the PlayStation Remote Play app, which allowed him to access his entire catalog of titles for the PlayStation 5 via steaming. In terms of experience, he says that the result was similar when he used the Xbox app in conjunction with an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription.

“In fact, while the PlayStation app requires you to have a PS5, I can access Xbox games through the cloud without needing to have the console, just with an active Game Pass Ultimate subscription“, he says.

The games he most enjoyed playing via the cloud were the following:

  • Saga Yakuza;
  • Star Wars Jedi Survivor;
  • Genshin Impact;
  • Fallout 4;
  • Persona 3.

Mórin also pointed out what he found to be negative about this experience of having the smartphone as the main gaming platform for a week.

He mentions that the issue of latency, and connection issues, can hinder the experience. So playing this way isn’t perfect, but he concluded that it was satisfying, and that it feels like a futuristic experience, like a glimpse into a time when we won’t need a console.

“I don’t think mobile phones will replace consoles, however, smartphones will be an increasingly important platform for the gaming world, which will result in more AAA titles on our pocket devices”concluded the journalist.
