“The biggest update since they were first introduced”. This is how the Apple classifies the news for the iPad Pro which she presented today at the event “Let Loose.”

The trendy iPad Pro has taken another step towards its positioning as a device for content creation and media playback. It now has an OLED screen, as well as being Apple’s first device equipped with the brand new M4 chip.

Novo design

In addition to updates under the hood, the new iPad Pro also has a design refinement. Simply the thinnest product in Apple history.

There are two screen sizes: 13 inches, with a thickness of 5.1 mm, and 11 inches, with a thickness of 5.3 mm. In context, the iPad Pro launched in 2022 was 6.4mm thick.

Adopting this new design resulted in some compromises. The new device no longer has a slot dedicated to SIM chips. Just like the iPhone, it is now only possible to use chips in eSIM format.

Dimensions and weight:

  • 11-inch iPad Pro (2024): 24.97 x 17.75 x 0.53 centimeters, 446 grams;
  • 13-inch iPad Pro (2024): 28.16 x 21.55 x 0.51 centimeters, 582 grams.

The new iPad Pro relies on OLED. For the first time, Apple offers a screen of this type for its line of tablets. Named Ultra Retina XDR2, the screen is capable of reaching peak brightness of 1,000 nits for content with standard dynamic range, SDR, and up to 1,600 nits for HDR content. In addition, of course, it offers the benefits inherent to the panel technology, such as the high contrast rate.

Apple also explained that the new iPad Pro’s screen features two OLED panels that work together, one on top of the other. This “sandwich” aims to increase one of the points that usually go against OLED screens: brightness. With this solution applied by the company, the product promises to be able to meet a high brightness rate and dynamic range. “It’s like holding a movie theater in your hands,” points out Apple.

The glass that covers the screen has Apple’s own anti-reflective treatment on models with 1 TB or higher.

The screen resolution is as follows:

  • 11-inch iPad Pro (2024): 2,420 x 1,668 pixels, 264 dpi
  • 13-inch iPad Pro (2024): 2,752 x 2,064 pixels, 264 dpi.

The debut of a new processor

The iPad Pro 2024 received the best that Apple can offer in terms of SoC from its Apple Silicon platform. The device is equipped with the new M4 processor, developed from a second generation 3nm production process. According to Apple, the new chip is about 1.5 times faster than the M2.

The SoC has 3 high-performance cores and 6 low-power cores in versions with 256 GB and 512 GB of storage. In the 1 TB and 2 TB models, the configuration is as follows: 4 high-performance cores and 6 energy-efficient cores. The amount of RAM also differs: 8 GB in the 256 GB and 512 GB models and 16 GB in the 1 TB version.

The neural processing unit, with 16 cores, is about 60 times faster than the first generation and is capable of processing 38 trillion operations per second.

With this new processor, iPad Pro has the raw processing power to handle the most up-to-date AI tasks.

Ensuring high performance in situations such as isolating elements such as the main subject from the background in photos in programs such as Final Cut Pro. Functions related to some specific apps.

A lot is also expected from the energy efficiency part of an ARM-based chip. Apple continues to refine this attribute on its platform. The company highlights that the M4 chip consumes half as much as the M2, maintaining the same numbers in terms of performance.

Camera

The rear camera of the new iPad Pro is 12 MP, with f/1.8 aperture and a five-element lens. There is compatibility with Smart HDR 4 technology and the device is capable of recording videos in 4K at 60 FPS in the ProRes codec. A LiDar scanner for 3D mapping in compatible apps is also present. There is also a 12 MP (f/2.4) camera on the front, positioned on the side.
