JEDEC is close to releasing standards for the next generation of high-bandwidth memory, HBM4. The council doesn’t offer specific dates, but says the “highly anticipated” standard is nearly ready.
HBM memory technology is particularly popular in the manufacture of high-performance GPUs. As such, the AI segment has been using it extensively in its latest-generation accelerators. This is why JEDEC states that HBM is “vital for applications that require efficient management of large-scale data and complex computations.” This includes generative AI, HPC, servers, and high-end graphics cards.
The promise of the HBM4 generation is to use a double-channel memory count per stack, compared to HBM3. JEDEC mentions 24Gb and 32Gb layers for the new components, with options of 4, 8, 12 or 16 TSV layers.

It is also worth noting that the committee is preparing the standard so that a single controller can be compatible with both HBM3 and HBM4, if necessary. Thus, the same board can use memories from both generations to achieve a balance between cost and performance. The latest version of the technology, however, has a different “footprint”, so the hardware must adapt to it.
Will we have HBM4 in 2025?
Unfortunately, JEDEC (Joint Electron Engineering Council) doesn’t offer a publication window for the new standard, but Samsung says we’ll see the components as early as next year.
In October last year, the South Korean tech giant spoke of its plans to deliver HBM4 as early as 2025. With the standard close to being released, this is a possible prediction.
The company, however, still needs to prove its expertise in HBM3E. In early June, the manufacturer was in an awkward situation when Nvidia declared that its memories of this type were “not ready for AI.” The following month, we had information that Samsung had already solved the problems with its supposed memories and was just waiting for Nvidia’s approval and orders.
It remains to be seen whether Samsung can offer HBM3E on a large scale before we see the company talk about HBM4 again.
