Huawei presents Ascend 920 there, taking advantage of the NVIDIA H20

Huawei seems ready to take advantage of the vacuum left by banning the sale of GPUS H20 with a new product, its ASCEND 920 AI accelerators. Apparently the company revealed the signs to its investors as soon as the current US government began to talk about the new restrictions on Nvidia, making it clear that the company wanted to enjoy the moment.

Huawei talked about the new Ascend 920 there in the same event in which it revealed its cluster Cloudmatrix 384, which still uses the 910C version of its accelerators. The company expects to start mass production of products in the second half of 2025.

The Chinese technology giant’s roadmap reveals that the company probably anticipated some form of restriction on H20 sales, which proved immensely popular in China. Huawei claims that it is ready to start mass production of its Ascend 920 there in the coming months and the ad shortly after banishment is more evidence of it.

Ascend 910C already reaches 60% of the performance of a H100, according to reports from DeepSek, which makes the Ascend 920 there a plausible replacement for the H20. The new Huawei GPU will be produuzda in the 6NM process, using HBM3 modules, expecting to deliver up to 900TFLops performance, with 4TB/s of memory band.

Although the Ascend 920 does not deliver the identical performance to what the H20 offers, if the plate approaches the performance it should be enough, since companies in China no longer have many options. Apparently, not even modified RTX 5090D models will be another alternative in the country.
