Before becoming world famous for companies like Tesla and SpaceX, Elon Musk I already had a lot of knowledge in the field of entrepreneurship. In the mid-90s, the South African businessman had already set up his Zip2, which was a kind of city guide, a yellow pages focused on the internet, and also to a financial startup, X.com.

As we reported here, the old Twitter has completed a historic transition. The social network purchased by Musk in 2022, left the twitter.com domain aside and will continue as X.com. When using the browser and trying to access twitter.com, a redirect is automatically made to the domain that now represents the new era of the social network that had a small bird as its symbol.

X.com was once the name of a payments platform

As we remember in this article, Musk’s certain obsession with X began more than 20 years ago. In 1999, at the age of 28, Elon Musk had already made a fortune selling Zip2 (founded in 1996 together with Kimbal, his brother, and Greg Kouri) to Compaq. The company was sold in 1999 for US$307 million. Musk pocketed around US$22 million from the sale.

In December of that same year, Musk used X.com for the first time. Not as a social network, but as a payments platform. The company centralized digital shopping, online banking, investments, loans and credit cards. In short, it managed transactions.

When was the X.com domain registered?

Regarding domain registration, according to ICANN, the body that regulates the domain name registration system, X.com was registered in April 1993.

In mid-2000, due to a partnership with payments startup Confinity, X.com gave way to a brand that was much better known to the general public: PayPal.

This name, PayPal, was a type of service offered by Confinity. With the merger with X.com, those involved came to the conclusion – much to Musk’s displeasure – that the best path would be to abandon the old name once and for all and establish the company as PayPal.

Fast forward 25 years, Musk now has a new venture named after his old brand. Last Friday (17), in a post on his profile on X, Musk said the following: “all major systems are now on X.com”. In the post, the tycoon also revived the old logo that represented his payments platform.
