Last week, Canalys released a report showing that the Xiaomi has surpassed Motorola and is now the second largest smartphone market in Latin America. This result comes from the second quarter of the year, with the Samsung in the lead, selling 10.2 million units and growing 9% annually, reaching 30% of the market.

Samsung’s Galaxy A line has been a success among mid-range devices, especially because price is a deciding factor for Latin American buyers. Xiaomiin turn, grew 35% compared to the previous year, with 6.2 million smartphones sold, including the Redmi and POCO sub-brands, known for their good value for money.

Meanwhile, the Motorola dropped to third place with 5.7 million phones sold, a drop of 1% since 2023, but still maintaining a significant market share of 17%. Transsion, owner of the TECNO and Infinix brands, grew the most, with 52%, conquering 9% of the market.

Honor, another Chinese brand, is also investing in Latin America and saw a 47% increase in sales, with around 1.7 million smartphones sold. ZTE and Apple have a smaller presence, with Apple near the bottom of the list.

Miguel Pérez, Senior Analyst at Canalys, commented:

“The number of smartphones shipped in the first half of 2024 is the highest ever recorded in two quarters in Latin America. Demand continues to grow thanks to a constant cycle of updates, driven by significant investments from expanding suppliers.”

In total, 33.5 million smartphones were sold in the second quarter of 2024, an increase of 20% compared to 2023. Most of the devices sold cost less than US$ 200 (~R$ 1,100).
