A Sony announced a strategic agreement with Kadokawa Corporationn, becoming the company’s largest shareholder. Although rumors pointed to a complete takeoverthe partnership reinforces cooperation between the two Japanese giants, focused on strengthening their operations in the global entertainment market.
Kadowaka is responsible for From Software, famous for iconic titles such as Elden Ring, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice e Demon’s Souls.
“Through this capital and business alliance, we will become the largest shareholder in Kadokawa, which constantly creates a wide variety of IPs, including publications and books such as light novels and manga, as well as games and anime,” said Hiroki Totoki, President , COO and CFO, Sony Group.
A million-dollar investment
Sony acquired 12,054,100 new Kadokawa shares in a transaction totaling approximately US$318 million. As a result, the company now holds approximately 10% of Kadokawa’s shares, consolidating itself as the company’s main shareholder. This participation includes shares previously acquired, in February 2021.
This move is part of Sony’s larger strategy to expand its presence in the media and entertainment sector, using its technological expertise and global reach to enhance the value of Kadokawa’s intellectual properties.
Collaboration History
The partnership between the two companies is nothing new. Sony and Kadokawa have collaborated on several projects over the years. However, the new agreement signals an even more significant rapprochement, with ambitious plans that promise to expand the influence of both in the international market.
According to the announcement, the objective is to strengthen the value of both companies’ IPs and facilitate deeper collaborations, such as new investments and strategic projects on a global scale.
Plans for the future of the partnership
Among the initiatives discussed for the coming years, the following stand out:
- Global IP adaptation: Develop live-action films and TV series based on Kadokawa properties, with a focus on reaching international audiences.
- Anime expansion: increase anime co-production and strengthen its worldwide distribution through Sony Group channels.
- Game publishing: investing in the publication of titles developed by Kadokawa, expanding the company’s reach in the games sector.
- Talent training: develop professionals to produce virtual content, promoting innovations in the entertainment market.
