If the race for chip production wasn’t already easy for Samsung Electronics, things got a little more complicated with a major strike organized by unionized employees at the company’s headquarters – in South Korea.

Starting today and for an indefinite period, 30,000 employees are on strike to fight for better working conditions and a pay rise. The demands of the NSEU (National Samsung Electronics Union) are a 3.5% increase in the base payroll and an extra day off to celebrate the union’s formation day.

The strike at Samsung Electronics is also aimed at establishing a fairer bonus system for executives and lower-level employees. In the last quarter, the corporation reported that it had a 15-fold increase in profits, followed by a surge in the value of semiconductors due to demand for artificial intelligence.

Samsung chip production delay

NSEU told Reuters that the main objective of this strike is to completely halt the manufacturer’s chip production – with the move already having success in delaying production on some of its lines.

Samsung Electronics denies this and claims that the three-day stoppage that took place before the strike began did not impact its chip production. They say they will continue to talk with the union and employees to reach an agreement.

Samsung Electronics will ensure that there will be no disruptions to production lines. We remain committed to engaging in good faith negotiations with the union.

A general strike

Initially, the NSEU promoted the dismissal of 6,500 Samsung Electronics employees over a three-day period. Having failed to reach an agreement during that period, they have now quadrupled the number of people who have joined the movement and are still steadfast in their demands.

The manufacturer is recovering from the decline suffered in the memory market during 2023, with the possibility that the movement will impact its activities and next steps within the tech industry. The company also represents 20% of the gross domestic product of all of South Korea, which worries experts.

This is the time when we need the power and help of our comrades. All members who participated in the first strike must continue to strike.
