Sales of dedicated GPUs plummet 14.5% in the third quarter of 2024

A recent survey by the financial analysis firm Jon Peddie indicates that the sale of dedicated GPUs had a considerable drop in the third quarter of 2024. The Q3 of any year usually shows an increase in sales of products of this type, but this time there was a drop of 14 .5% compared to the previous quarter.

The graph below shows the sales progress of dedicated graphics cards over different quarters. They appear as “AIB”. We can see that the segment has been in decline since last year, and Q3 2024 was its worst quarter since Q2 2023.

The drop in the number of GPU sales is atypical for a third quarter, but it is not surprising in this case. At this point, users are visibly waiting for the debut of new generations of AMD and NVIDIA cards before purchasing their new video cards.

Speaking of AMD and NVIDIA, the survey details show problematic numbers for those who would like to see more competition in the market. The “green side” managed to conquer another 2% of the segment in the last quarter, reaching an impressive 90% share of the market. This leaves AMD with 10%, because Intel has not yet sold enough units to appear in the proportion.

Jon Peddie analysts predict very bad numbers for the dedicated GPU market in the coming years, during the Trump administration. The projection is -6% per year – that is, a shrinkage – between 2024 and 2028 for this segment.

This negative outlook is due to the president-elect’s promises to impose heavy tariffs on imports to the USA. There are estimates that the price of notebooks and electronics could jump by up to 45% after taxes are implemented.
