A Sony is very excited about the performance of the PlayStation 5 in the market. And there’s a very good reason for that. In the latest financial report, the company showed that the PS5 is doing better than previous consoles in terms of profit. The company’s strategy is working well, and the PS5 is becoming a market leader and a literal money-printing machine for Sony.

Profit of US$ 10 billion in 4 years

And speaking of numbers, they are truly expressive! The PlayStation 5 generated an impressive figure of around US$106 billion in just four years. To get a clearer idea of how significant this value is, just compare it with its predecessor, the PlayStation 4, which raised US$107 billion, but took three additional years to reach that mark. This impressive data shows that the PS5, in practically half the time, has already equaled the PS4 in revenue.

The outlook is also quite favorable when we look at operating profit. Here, the PS5 made an astonishing $10 billion during its first four years on the market, while its predecessor, the PS4, needed a full seven years to rack up $9 billion.

In other words, with less time on the market, the PS% has already made more profit for Sony than the PS4 in seven years. With these huge numbers, Sony can say with certainty that the PlayStation 5 is the most profitable console in the company’s history.

Spending on add-ons also increased

It is important to note that profits do not just come from people who buy the PS5. These same users also spent 26% more on related products. When we look closely at this extra spend, we see an impressive 176% increase in additional content. This includes DLCs (downloadable content) and microtransactions. This number shows how engaged players are with their favorite games. Sales of services also rose significantly, with an increase of 57%. Even sales of accessories, such as controllers and headsets, grew 34%.

It is important to note, however, that not every outlook is exclusively positive: the PS5 is still behind the PS4 when we analyze sales of complete games. In this regard, there is a decrease of 12%. Part of this discrepancy possibly stems from the lack of sufficiently impactful major releases in the PS5 universe.

Although the new generation has already been graced with exclusive titles such as Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, God of War Ragnarök e Horizon: Forbidden Westthe PS4 featured heavyweights like Bloodborne, The Witcher 3, Infamous: Second Son e GTA 5 in their first years of life. This helped increase sales of full games at the time.

However, Sony is not a company that rests on the success it already has. They want to go further, reach more people and sell more. The company plans to grow its well-known franchises and create new series to attract more players. Furthermore, everyone is eagerly awaiting the “GTA 6” and for possible arrival of PS5 Pro. Without a doubt, these launches could greatly increase the Japanese company’s profits in the coming years.
