PlayStation is looking at the portable device market

The PlayStation team is paying more attention to the handheld market, thanks to the success that the PS Portal is having among the public. With positive sales, they are evaluating what will be the next step within this segment.

The information was revealed by insider Tom Henderson, who responded to a question from one of his followers about new releases in this line, stating that the entire Sony is keeping an eye on this and that it is possible that the topic is being debated internally.

Additionally, he also states that handheld devices were a big highlight during gamescom 2024, but that consumers should wait to buy one – as improvements and more options are expected to arrive in the gaming industry soon.

Almost everyone at gamescom brought up interesting discussions about handhelds. My advice is to save up for a little more money if you’re planning on buying one. It seems like a lot of new features and improvements are coming soon (no word on when).

Even though PlayStation has its eye on this portable device market, it is important to note that the brand is no stranger to this segment. In 2004, the PSP was launched – one of the hardware devices that competed with the Nintendo DS – and in 2011, the PS Vita was released, which was later synchronized with the PS4.

Even though the PSP reached a large audience and is still one of the brand’s “darlings”, the PS Vita did not have the same popularity and ended up falling behind – both in sales and in third-party support for the video game.

It’s worth noting that the PlayStation Portal is nothing more than a device called a “remote player”, allowing you to play your PS5 through the unified network between them. In addition to the DualSense features, it also comes with an 8-inch LCD screen.
