With the alleged lack of GDDR6X, NVIDIA may switch to using GDDR6 memory to continue supplying GeForce RTX 4070 GPUs – at least temporarily.

Rumors suggest that in August we will see a shortage of GDDR6X models in the industry, leading to a reduction in the stock of video cards. The reason for this would be caused by an alleged problem in the quality certification of the modules produced by Micron – forcing the manufacturer to change some requirements to maintain the products.

Getting straight to the point, NVIDIA’s possible shift towards GDDR6 memory for GeForce RTX 4070 GPUs would go far beyond using slower material than what consumers have been seeing on the market recently.

The difference would have to be adapted in the GPU die itself, and would only be possible if several adjustments were made to the hardware and software. If this were to occur, it could still cause a performance throttling at higher resolutions when using the 192-bit bus.

And despite all this, even if NVIDIA changed its GeForce RTX 4070 to a variant that uses GDDR6 memory, seeing this in the most advanced models would be even more complex – such as the Super, Ti versions, the GeForce RTX 4080 itself and the RTX 4090, since all of these use GDDR6X and its high bandwidth.

GDDR6 speed could hold NVIDIA back

Even if the rumors are true, NVIDIA would need to address the speed issue with GDDR6 VRAM. While GDDR6X is the fastest model currently, operating between 21 Gbps and 23 Gbps (RTX 4080 Super), GDDR6 typically reaches 18 Gbps in recent GPUs.

It is worth noting that the information is just a rumor, but it is important to take into account that this supposed lack of stock may not last that long either. The brief pause in the supply of GDDR6X may not require the manufacturer to adopt a sudden change in its lineup like the one mentioned above.

Despite this lack of GDDR6X on the market, it is also stated that NVIDIA may reduce the number of GeForce RTX GPUs due to its focus on getting AI accelerators and the RTX 50 “Blackwell” line to market soon – meeting the huge demand that the artificial intelligence market is forming.
