New Crucial P310 is the world’s fastest M.2 2230 SSD, according to Micron

Micron this week launched the Crucial P310, a small SSD in the M.2 2230 format, aimed at mini PCs and other portable devices. The product’s big highlight, according to its manufacturer, is that this is the fastest domestic drive in the world currently available in this format.

The Crucial P310 connects via the PCIe Gen4 interface to deliver read speeds of up to 7,100MB/s and write speeds of up to 6,000MB/s. As Hot Hardware notes, these numbers actually fall slightly behind the IRDM Pro Nano, announced a few months ago.

However, Micron’s new small SSD excels in IOPS (random read performance). The manufacturer says that the Crucial P310 exceeds 1 million IOPS, which is much higher than the IRDM product. In addition, this metric tends to be more important for gaming performance, an area that has become especially important for M.2 2230 SSDs, for portable devices like the Steam Deck.

Another advantage of the newly announced drive is that it is actually available to buy. It can be found on Amazon in the US now, costing $191.98 for the 1TB version and $215 for the 2TB capacity.

As mentioned, the maker of the “world’s fastest” M.2 2230 SSD is eyeing the expansion of the portable console market with its new product. Jonathan Weech, one of Micron’s executives, stated:

“Today’s gaming is power-hungry and performance-hungry, and this is especially true for mobile gamers who want to be able to access all their favorite games at their fingertips. We created the Crucial P310 to satisfy this need for speed and more capability (…).”

Micron’s new SSD is expected to meet the needs of today’s portable gaming consoles. However, thanks to PCIe 5.0, some SSDs in the traditional 2280 format already reach nearly twice the speed – and we even have Crucial products with these specifications.
