A Microsoft launched a new website with an interactive game called Real or Not Quiz. The goal is to help people identify images created by artificial intelligence.

Brad Smith, president of Microsoft, announced the new platform X/Twitter this Monday (5), encouraging everyone to test the game. Smith highlights the importance of efficient tools to protect against digital fraud and asked the US Congress for stronger laws against deepfakes.

How does the game work?

In the Real or Not Quiz game, players evaluate whether 15 images are real or AI-generated, receiving a score at the end. The website doesn’t explain how to spot AI images, but it does offer a chance to practice. Access the game at realornotquiz.com.

With the advancement of technologies such as Image Creator da Microsoft e FROM-E 3 OpenAI’s Real or Not Quiz is making it increasingly difficult to tell whether images are generated by AI or real photographs. While some companies are working on solutions to flag these images, Real or Not Quiz is a way to develop AI detection capabilities by eyeballing them.

I tested the game here and I’ll tell you, it’s not that simple. I got a score of 73%. But some images are practically impossible to tell if they are real or generated by AI. The image below, for example. This landscape could be either a real photo edited with greater saturation and graininess or it could be generated by AI.

I could have sworn on my feet that this other image was a real photo. But it was generated by artificial intelligence.

Other cases are much simpler. The photo of the singer below is clearly generated by artificial intelligence. Just look at his little hand near the microphone. Either he has some kind of disability or this photo was generated by artificial intelligence.

Anyway, it’s worth spending a few minutes playing around on this site and trying to figure out whether the images are real or not. Then tell us in the comments what your score was.
