Corsair drops the famous 80 Plus label for its power supplies

Corsair announced this week that it will no longer use its well-known 80 Plus certification to denote the efficiency of its power supplies. Instead, the manufacturer will adopt the Cybenetics certification, which it believes is more complete. As such, the certifications will now include noise information as well.

As you can see in the image above, Cybenetics efficiency labels follow the same color hierarchy as the 80 Plus, making the transition easier for users to understand. In many cases, the font will remain the same color moving from one label to the other, but there are exceptions. Corsair has a blog post explaining the difference.

In short, the company states that “Cybenetics tests are much more complete and detailed than 80 Plus, leading to more accurate results.”

The new certification now includes a seal for the noise levels of the PSUs. It will appear independently, ranging from F (or standard) for noisy PSUs to A++ for “virtually silent” operation.

It is interesting to note that the energy efficiency seal does not change for sources of different capacities in the same model, but the noise seal may change.

As mentioned earlier, it is interesting to note that there are different noise labels for different capacities in each source model.

Cybenetics’ current certification format is certainly more intuitive for the 80 Plus than it was when it was first introduced in 2017. Will other manufacturers now follow Corsair’s lead, or will they opt to stick with the “classic” seals?
