Intel has high expectations for its 18A process, increasingly close to commercial use for wide -scale manufacturing of chips. However, the company no longer has plans to stop ordering units produced by TSMC, as one of its executives recently revealed.
During a conference for technology companies, John Pitzer, one of Intel’s executives, talked about it regarding TSMC chips. “I think a year ago we were talking about trying to reach zero (TSMC orders) as soon as possible, but this is no longer the strategy.”

Pitzer then praises Intel’s partner and competitor, as explained: “I believe it is always good to have at least some of our wafers with TSMC. They are a great supplier. This creates healthy competitiveness with them and Intel Foundry. ”
While no longer seeking to “zero” the wafers that buy from TSMC, Intel still intends to reduce this proportion. According to Tom’s hardware, currently about 30% of Intel’s chips come from the Taiwanese manufacturer. “I’m not sure what the right level would be,” Pitzer said about this proportion. “Would it be 20%? Would it be 15%? We are working on it. But let’s use, I think, external suppliers longer in this new strategy. ”

Intel will use 18a in its most advanced components
Intel hopes to reduce the number of TSMC order chips because it uses the Taiwanese company in the manufacture of its niche components. The company’s most advanced processors, such as the Xeon, or the future Core 300 Panther Lake are made by their own factories.

The Panther Lake must mark the debut of process 18th in the CPUS domestic segment, and will be manufactured at Intel’s FAB 52 and 62 in Arizona. Advanced chips are the most expensive to do, so it is in this area that the company finds the biggest economy by not ordering them from third parties.
TSMC is in charge of manufacturing products such as controllers and components that use more mature processes such as 14NM and 22NM, which are not costly, relatively relatively.
