Western Digital has announced that it successfully separated from its previously produced business and sold Nand products. This SSD side of the business is now completely dismembered at Sandisk and Western Digital is a HDD -only business.
This means that the company will focus on its native hard disk technology, with the SSD division being dismembered for Sandisk. I.e, Product lines like WD_Black will now be manufactured by Sandisk and the Western Digital brand will no longer be present.
It seems that the storage industry is not having a great time in terms of attraction in consumer markets. Previously, Solidigm also decided to leave the industry.

IMPACT OF THE DECISION
The decision is a surprise especially for consumers who like Western Digital SSD products. WD was included alongside names like Samsung and crucial when it comes to offering high performance SSDs with extremely fast speeds. Seeing the brand disappearing was not expected.
It stands out that This does not mean that WD products will disappear from the market. Instead, they will be taken care of by Sandisk, so the quality is expected to remain consistent.
For the average consumer, Sandisk is expected to also deal with aspects of the supply chain, including after-sales services. And WD SSDs now will see a change in your nomenclature scheme, apparently from “WD” to “SD”.
Reasons for the decision
Although the reason behind Western Digital’s decision is uncertain for now, the company believes to see a more promising future in HDD markets, particularly those necessary for AI work cargo.
A few weeks ago, WD CEO, Irving Tan, said HDD shipments should see a rise trend due to market demand. And it is in this segment that the company will focus on the future. Therefore, it is safe to say that the digital western will not be in the SSD markets, at least while Ia Hype lasts.
