Officially launched on November 7th, the PlayStation 5 Pro (PS5 Pro) has been attracting attention in recent months due to its suggested price of US$700, considered quite high for the category. However, Hiroki Totoki, president of Sony, claims that this value is not a problem for the type of audience the company wants to reach.
During the release of the company’s most recent fiscal report, the executive acknowledged that many people have comments to make about the value of the hardware. “But the price of the PS5 Pro hasn’t had a negative impact, I don’t think”, he explained. According to him, this happens because the product is aimed at really hardcore gamers.
While it still seems too early to say whether the company’s strategy was a success, its launch shows that it was not an explosive sales success. In the markets where it is already available, the product has not sold out in stores and can be easily found by interested consumers — and who have the large sum of money necessary to purchase it.
Launch of the PS5 Pro affected the value of other components
While the famous “scalpers” did not find the PS5 Pro a way to profit from hardware resale, the product’s debut affected the value of another accessory sold by Sony. Made available separately by the company, the console’s disc reader ended up running out of stock at several retailers even before the new console’s debut.
According to VGC, in the United Kingdom the easiest way to find a new unit is by using sites like eBay, but you will have to pay a “premium value” for it. While the official value of the accessory is £99.99 in the region, it currently ranges between £150 and £250 on the auction sitehelping to make the Japanese company’s new console even more expensive.
In Brazil, the PS5 Pro is expected to be launched in the second half of November and is already being sold in several stores for a suggested price of R$6,999. Whoever decides to invest this money will find a machine with a GPU that is much more powerful than the basic model, but which may not represent as big an upgrade as the one promised by Sony.
