New feature will start to be available next week

This development is part of the Data Transfer Project, an open-source initiative that aims to make data portable across different online platforms. In a statement, the Data Transfer Initiative explained that support for transferring photos and videos from Google Photos to iCloud Photos will be made available over the next week.

This expansion of direct data transfer offerings between Apple and Google complements existing transfers from iCloud Photos to Google Photos and fulfills one of the core principles of the Data Transfer Initiative: reciprocity.

The tool, powered by the Data Transfer Project, joins other direct portability tools available to billions of people around the world thanks to the efforts of DTI’s founding partners: Apple, Google and Meta. Apple and Google have also published support articles detailing the process for transferring photo collections.

Information about the new service

Apple said the new service will be available in over 240 countries and regions around the world. However, it’s worth noting that the service won’t be available to child accounts or Managed Apple ID accounts. Additionally, you won’t be able to import photos and videos to iCloud while Advanced Data Protection is enabled.

The company also said that when you transfer your photos and videos to iCloud Photos, the original files will not be deleted from Google Photos. You don’t need to download the photos or videos to perform the transfer, which happens directly from Google to iCloud. Additionally, they said that the transfer time can vary from a few hours to a few days, depending on the size of your collections.

How to transfer photos from Google Photos to iCloud?

To start transferring your photos and videos from Google Photos to iCloud Photos, users should go to Google Takeout and follow the instructions to start a Google Photos export.

When you choose “Apple – iCloud Photos” as the destination, you will need to sign in with your Apple ID and allow Google to add photos and videos to iCloud.

For more details on the transfer process and what happens after it is complete, users can visit the Apple and Google websites, where they will find additional information and detailed guidance.
