During his participation in the Computex 2024, a AMD presented its new generation of desktop processors, the Ryzen 9000codename Granite Ridge.

Based on the Zen 5 architecture, these new CPUs promise a 16% increase in IPC (Instructions per clock cycle).

Ryzen 9 9950X is the top of the line

The flagship is the processor Ryzen 9 9950X, a model that has 16 cores and 32 threads. The boost clock is up to 5.7 GHz, the TDP is 170W and there is 80 MB of cache.

In addition to this option, the Ryzen 9000 line will initially feature the following models:

  • Ryzen 9 9900X: 12 cores, 24 threads, boost clock of up to 5.6 GHz, TDP of 120W and 76 MB cache;
  • Ryzen 7 9700X: 8 cores, 16 threads, boost clock of up to 5.5 GHz, TDP of 65W and 40 MB cache;
  • Ryzen 5 9600X: 6 cores, 12 threads, boost clock of up to 5.4 GHz, TDP of 65W and 38 MB of cache.

All of them are based on AMD’s new architecture, Zen 5. The company defines the jump from Zen 4 to Zen 5 as a “comprehensive update”

Built under TSMC’s 4nm manufacturing process, AMD is talking about up to double the data bandwidth between L2 and L1 cache, and between L1 and the floating point unit with the new Zen 5 architecture.

Up to twice the bandwidth for front-end instructions and up to twice the performance on AI-based tasks and AVX-512 instructions are also guaranteed.

Thanks to the use of a multi-chip structure, AMD was able to use two TSMC manufacturing processes. The main cores, the x86 units, region named CCD, are based on 4nm (N5), while the data input and output microcircuit, the IOD, manufacturing followed with TSMC’s 6nm lithography, the N6.

Novos chipsets: AMD X870 e X870E

In addition to the new processors, AMD also revealed two new chipset options, X870 and X870E, direct successors to the X670 and X670E. Use with the AM5 socket is maintained, and among the advantages of the new chipsets is support for faster DDR5 memories with EXPO profiles.

There is also PCI-Express 5.0 and NVMe support on all slots and USB 4.0 as standard.

Ryzen 9000 is compatible with current motherboards

Even with the introduction of new chipsets, which will result in new mobos hitting the market, AMD highlighted compatibility with AM5 motherboards prior to this launch. All it takes is a BIOS update.

According to AMD, support for AM5 remains guaranteed until 2027.

Nada de NPU

Unlike the approach with its new line of notebook chips, Ryzen AI 300, Ryzen 9000 processors do not feature a Neural Processing Unit, or NPU, designed to increase AI efficiency. The chip is based on the raw performance that the iGPU, the integrated video chip, can offer.

In one of the slides, AMD makes a comparison in this regard.

Price and availability

Ryzen 9000 processors will hit the market on July 31st. Suggested prices will be announced later.
