In recent years, the market for high-end smartphones, also known as flagships, has been experiencing a significant increase in prices, and in 2024 this trend intensified. Wang Teng, deputy general manager of Xiaomi China’s Marketing Department and general manager of the Redmi brand, recently explained on his Weibo account why these models have risen in price this year.
According to Wang, the main factors that contributed to this increase are the use of 3nm processor technology and the continuous increase in memory prices. Check out more details!

Adoption of processors with 3nm technology
One of the most cited reasons for the increase in prices of Xiaomi’s flagship smartphones is precisely the adoption of the 3nm manufacturing process in its latest processors.
3nm technology has brought a significant advance compared to previous generations, mainly in terms of energy efficiency and superior performance. However, this technological leap has its price, literally.
As Wang explained, the 3nm process requires massive investments in production, which ends up greatly increasing the manufacturing costs of the processors. This increase in costs, in turn, ends up being passed on to the consumer, which causes the prices of high-end devices to rise on the shelves.
Continuing increase in memory prices
Another important factor mentioned by Wang was the increase in the price of memories. According to him, there was robust growth in memory prices throughout the year, which ended up directly affecting the cost of smartphone versions with greater storage capacities.
This meant that flagship devices with more advanced memory configurations had even higher prices, reinforcing the upward trend in final values.
Xiaomi’s response to consumer concerns
With these price increases becoming a concern for consumers, Wang Teng spoke a little about this issue directly in his post. He acknowledged the difficulty in maintaining reasonable prices for flagship smartphones at the end of 2024, stating that “it is quite difficult to set the prices of flagships at the end of the year.”
However, Wang also offered reassurance to users, stating that Xiaomi remains committed to offering “reasonable prices” for its devices. He asked consumers for patience, promising that the company would not disappoint them, especially with future launches.
Redmi K80 series launch
And among Xiaomi’s upcoming launches is the long-awaited Redmi K80 series, which should hit the market later this year, with the launch scheduled for October 10th. Wang Teng stated that the Redmi K80 series will bring a huge leap in terms of performance and improvements in other aspects. The series will feature two main models: Redmi K80 and Redmi K80 Pro.
Recently, both devices obtained the network access license from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, indicating that they are ready for official launch. The registered model numbers are 24122RKC7C and 24117RK2CC, and previous reports suggest the launch will take place before the end of the year.
