An investigation by Hardware Unboxed has concluded that account privileges in Windows may be affecting the performance of AMD Ryzen 9000 processors. Test results show performance difference of almost 4% in games aloneas the issue does not appear to affect productivity applications.

This issue not only affects AMD Zen 5 CPUs, but also the Ryzen 7000 generation, according to the channel’s tests. In different games, the Ryzen 7 9700X delivered up to 10+ FPS. The Ryzen 7 7700X also shows a performance change, but smaller.

On average, the Ryzen 7 7700X sees a 2.6% increase with the proper account privilege setup, while the mid-range Ryzen 9000 CPU delivers 3.8% more gaming performance on average. In other words, AMD’s new microarchitecture suffers more.

AMD suggests clean Windows installation for Ryzen 9000

According to Andreas Schilling of HardwareLuxx, AMD asked reviewers to perform a clean installation of chipset drivers when changing processors during testing, but the ideal is a clean installation of Windows, according to the owner of Ryzen.

Unfortunately, sometimes Windows fails to apply the correct provisioning after the installed CPU has been changed. You can try uninstalling and reinstalling the AMD chipset driver as a workaround, but ideally a fresh installation of Windows is recommended. Make sure to restart and wait for the system to idle so that the provisioning installation can complete.

This would be a general suggestion for AMD Ryzen 9000 processor users. But for reviewers, the company even suggested a separate SSD for swapping between the Ryzen 9 9950X/9900X and the SKUs below, Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 5 9600X.”so you don’t have to install Windows every time you switch between a single-CCD and dual-CCD configuration while benchmarking“.

In the document revealed by Andreas Schilling, AMD also says that it recommends a test with Cyberpunk 2077 to compare with its results. With a GeForce RTX 4090 and a Ryzen 9 9950X, the average is 210 FPS, and 200 FPS with the Ryzen 9 9900X.

It’s hard to know whether this Windows privilege issue could be the main cause of the loss of performance with AMD Ryzen 9000 processors. MSI, for example, has already released a new BIOS with exclusive settings that help alleviate this lack of extra performance.
