-
The bug does not affect the normal functioning of the system, only the recovery mode;
-
Microsoft has acknowledged the error and promises to release a fix soon.
Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) is a feature that allows the user to identify and resolve problems that prevent the operating system from booting or operating normally. But a recent Windows 11 update has caused this mechanism to not work properly.
It’s ironic, after all, one of the purposes of system updates is to correct failures, not cause them. But that’s exactly what happened with Windows 11’s October Patch Tuesday, released last week by Microsoft.
Patch Tuesday consists of a set of security updates for Windows (and other software) that Microsoft usually releases on the second Tuesday of each month.
In the latest edition, more than 170 bugs were fixed. But the company itself acknowledged that the package caused a bug that hinders the use of USB devices in WinRE:
After installing the Windows security update released October 14, 2025 (KB5066835), USB devices such as keyboards and mice do not work in Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).
If the keyboard doesn’t even work, it will no longer be possible to restore the operating system.

Let it be clear that the problem does not affect the functioning of Windows 11 under normal conditions of use. The flaw in question only prevents USB devices from working in the Windows Recovery Environment, a mode that only needs to be accessed if the operating system has any difficulty booting.
The ideal, therefore, is to wait for Microsoft to release a fix for the problem, which shouldn’t take long, after all, the company has already admitted the existence of the flaw and is already working on a solution.
Those who do not want to run the risk of having problems with this bug can access the Windows Update update history, search for the KB5066835 package and choose the uninstall option. After the issue has been resolved by Microsoft, the package can then be installed again.
The issue affects versions 25H2 (latest) and 24H2 of Windows 11, as well as Windows Server 2025.
Windows 10 is no longer supported by Microsoft, it’s worth remembering.
