The new November 2024 Steam Hardware and Software survey revealed that Windows 11 is the Operating System used by 53% of gamers. As the survey is based on opt-in, it may not be representative of reality, but it still represents a relevant advantage for the OS over others.

Windows 10 is in second place, present on 43% of Steam players’ computers.

Memory

There is interesting data about users’ hardware. 46% said they had 16GB of memory and 32% said they had 32GB. In third and fourth position, 8GB and 64GB, with 10% and 4% of respondents answering these options respectively.

And, considering the technology, it is reasonable to assume that the main combinations of memory modules are two 8GB or two 16GB, with the 8GB configuration being used by those planning to upgrade in the future.

It is also reasonable to assume that a significant portion of Windows 11 users have 16GB of memory and some Windows 10 users have 32GB on their computers.

Video

NVIDIA video cards were the most cited, with the most used being the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060, present in 5% of computers. And 35% of users said they had 8GB of dedicated video memory, with 18% saying they had 12GB and 12% saying they had 6GB.

Another fact that stands out in the research is that 56% of respondents stated that they use a resolution of 1920 x 1080 on their primary monitor. And the same amount of 56% said they use 3840 x 1080 resolution in multi-monitor configurations, which suggests the predominance of equal monitors.

Again, the proximity of 56% to 53% suggests that the same Windows users predominantly have two identical monitors.

In terms of software, Direct X 12 is present on 93% of computers.

Processors

Intel processors are present in 64% of computers and AMD in 36%. The majority of processors, 34%, feature 6 cores, with 18% and 20% featuring 4 and 8 cores. In fourth place in this category, 6% of respondents said they use a processor with 10 cores.

Other information

54% of users said they have 1TB or more of storage. Unfortunately, the search does not show any categories above. However, based on the information on available free space, it can be assumed that there are still few who reach 2TB of storage.

23% of users said they had between 100 and 249 GB free and 22% said they had between 250 and 499 GB free. With some games reaching more than 100 GB and running on the settings most used by users, it would not be surprising that, for some users, this means installing, at most, three more games.
