The first motherboard models with Z890 chipset for Intel Core Ultra 200S processors are causing problems with the 24H2 update of Windows 11. According to the website El Chapuzas Informatico, trying to update causes crashes on ASUS models of the new cards, and VideoCardz reports that the problem also affects other manufacturers such as Gigabyte, ASRock and MSI.
Apparently, the bug has something to do with an incompatibility between the integrated graphics of Intel Core Ultra 200S series processors and dedicated graphics cards. In other words, it only affects those who have both components, and is relatively easy to get around – just disable the processor’s integrated graphics. Furthermore, several of these manufacturers have already released BIOS updates that correct the bug.
According to Chapuzas Informatico, the problem affects not only the Z890 boards sent for review, but also the first wave of models available in stores. Therefore, it is especially important for early adopters to update the BIOS as soon as possible. In the video below, the people at KitGuru talk about the problem occurring on an MSI Z890 board:
ASUS teaches how to fix the problem on its Z890 boards
Confirmation of the problem affecting Z890 boards in stores, not just in reviewer samples, came from ASUS. The manufacturer explains in a FAQ how to get around the bug by disabling the iGPU or fix it once and for all by updating the BIOS:
A stopgap solution such as disabling the processor’s integrated graphics is not ideal, but many users do not feel comfortable updating the BIOS due to lack of practice. In these cases, it is interesting that ASUS itself allows you to update with the file compressed in .zip format, a feature that made its debut precisely on the manufacturer’s Z890 boards.
