A Western Digitalwhich owns the SanDisk brand, is displaying several products at the Future Memory and Storage Conference (FMS2024), a flash memory conference and exhibition.

Memory Cards and SSDs

The company has revealed that it is launching the world’s first 8TB SD memory card. It’s a SanDisk SDUC UHS-I SD card. There’s also a smaller-capacity 4TB model, which is still plenty of space to store files and media.

The cards will have a maximum speed of 100MB/s, and Western Digital says they should be ideal for smartphones, gaming devices, drones, cameras, and laptops. I imagine this type of product would be especially useful for photographers and videographers.

Another of the company’s consumer products is its first 16TB version of the SanDisk Desk Drive, doubling the capacity of its current largest external SSD. Western Digital has said that a portable version of the drive, likely in its Extreme Portable SSD line, is in the proof-of-concept phase, but WD will certainly be working hard to bring it to market quickly.

Other news from Western Digital

In addition to portable storage, WD is demonstrating the performance of mainstream NVMe PCIe SSDs using AI PCs, gaming rigs, workstations, laptops, and more.

The market of data center is an important area for businesses today. Western Digital’s related products include a High Capacity QLC eSSD 128TB drive that utilizes its 8th Gen NAND designed for fast AI data lakes and capacity-intensive performance applications. WD is also showcasing the first 32TB ePMR SMR HDD in the world for massive data storage at scale and a new 64TB eSSD for storage intensive applications.

There’s no word on a suggested price or release date for the high-capacity consumer SSDs and SD cards, but we do know they’ll carry a hefty price tag. The 8TB SanDisk Desk Drive costs $700, and the 1TB SanDisk Extreme Pro SD UHS-I memory card with speeds up to 90MB/s costs $180. These new products will certainly cost the price of an organ when they launch.
