Western Digital presented a new line of HDDs with a size of 2.5 inches and a capacity of 6TB of storage. Notably, this is the highest capacity point for this format in the last seven years, which should attract many to buy.
These configurations can be seen in the My Passport line of external devices, Black P10 and the G-Drive ArmorATD. It is worth noting that they will be thicker than the 5TB models, suggesting that the manufacturer simply installed an additional plate and the result “fattened” them – instead of developing new ones with improved density.

It is important to note that Western Digital’s 5TB 2.5-inch HDD models already had a thickness of 15mm – the standard with the highest Z-axis height for this format. In other words, the new 6TB version will hardly fit well on desktops, let alone notebooks – acting better as portable storage and in specialized products.
In terms of specifications, they also don’t surprise the public much. The My Passport, Black P10 and G-Drive ArmorATD versions offer 130 MB/s reading, just like their predecessors and have a USB 3.2 Gen 1 interface (reaching up to 5 GT/). They are compatible with USB Type-C and Micro USB Type-B connectors.
Western Digital has not revealed the recording method used in its 6TB HDDs, whether they use SMR (shingled magnetic recording) like previous models or CMR (conventional magnetic recording). Considering that they are updated models based on the standard seen in the past, it is assumed that they use SMR.
Sales of Western Digital’s tiny HDD
According to Western Digital, its 2.5-inch 6TB HDD is now available for sale in several authorized stores. The regular and Mac WD Passport are selling for $179.99. The Ultra version of both, with USB-C, is sold for $199.99
The WD My Passport Works, also with USB-C compatibility, will be sold for $184.99. The gaming versions, WD_Black P10 Game Drive will cost $184.99 as well; while the SanDisk Professional G-Drive ArmorATD has a suggested retail price of $229.99. They all come with a three-year limited warranty.
