The new Steam Machine has been compared to consoles since its announcement, which has led some people to raise the possibility of the machine being subsidized, as happens with video games at their launch. Valve, however, has confirmed that this will not be the case, and the product should be priced comparably to other PCs of the same hardware level.

Famously, companies like Sony and Microsoft often release their consoles in a subsidized manner, meaning they take a loss to offer the cheapest devices and gain a larger player base. The strategy is to recover the values later through the sale of games and services.

The Steam Machine’s strategy, however, is to promote itself due to its build quality and the Valve name, not so much because it is cheaper than its competitors. The confirmation came from Pierre-Loup Griffais, an engineer at the company who spoke about the matter with the SkillUp channel.

Valve highlights noise level and Bluetooth quality on Steam Machine

When asked about the possibility of a subsidized machine, Griffais responded as follows:

“No, it’s more along the lines of what you should expect in today’s PC market. Obviously, our goal is for it to be a good deal at that performance level. And then you have the features that are actually quite difficult to put together if you make your own gaming PC. Things like the small form factor, the noise level we achieve, or lack thereof, is really impressive and we’re excited for people to discover how quiet this thing is.”

Another part that can be complicated for a home assembly, according to the engineer, is the organization of Bluetooth antennas, which he also highlights on the Steam Machine.

“But we also have integration features like HDMI-CEC. The Bluetooth and wireless work we’ve done, the four antennas, the very deliberate design so you can have a great experience with four Bluetooth controls.”
