The Steam Machine’s proposal, as it was in its version 10 years ago, is to offer a PC with an experience comparable to consoles. Part of this plan involves ensuring that users of the new machines will not need to worry about whether or not the PC can run a certain game. This, then, is why Valve guarantees that the products are equal to or better than 70% of the gaming PCs people currently have at home.
The information came from Yazan Aldehayyat, a hardware engineer for Valve who recently did a video interview on Adam Savage’s channel. The company representative explained in more detail how they imagine the Steam Machine will enter the market.
“We want it to be a very simple experience. You don’t have to worry about, ‘Oh, I play these games. I don’t know if it will have enough performance to run those games.’ That was the first hurdle: we needed to make sure there was enough performance in the Steam Machine for you not to worry about it.”
Steam hardware research was important in planning the new Steam Machine
Ensuring advanced performance is no challenge on an expensive machine, but Valve also needs to ensure an affordable price for its Steam Machine. “Price is definitely a huge factor in the level of performance we are trying to achieve,” explained Aldehayyat.
“Essentially, we kind of use those two directions to triangulate what we think makes the most sense. Another thing we looked at was just Steam’s hardware research.”
