Valve is not yet ready to make SteamOS available to other portable devices, even though it is testing the possibilities and even bringing support for the ROG Ally’s additional buttons – as seen in the latest operating system update.
PCGamer spoke directly to the company’s designer, Lawrence Yang, who confirms that this arrival will not happen any time soon – at least not imminently, as the update suggested.
SteamOS isn’t ready to go live on other handhelds yet, but we’ll continue working on adding support.

Even though Valve has no plans to make SteamOS available on other portables and has not even released a forecast, it is important to note that the subject is discussed internally – so much so that the update with support for ROG Ally has come to light. In other words, it is possible that something is being worked on to bring the system to others.

Valve eyes the handheld market
Even with the launch of the Steam Deck in 2022, Valve remains attentive to the portable market and the arrival of SteamOS to others could be an asset that could bring some benefits.
Even though it would open the doors to stronger competition, since it would allow the public to choose which hardware they would like to have – in a scenario where everyone runs the same operating system – this would still bring profits by directing them to its digital store.
Of course there is jailbreaking and Valve’s SteamOS is not “unbreakable”, but there is a greater propensity for users of other portables to stay in their ecosystem rather than sticking with Windows 11 – which brings compatibility with the Epic Games Store, GOG, Amazon Games and several other launchers.
In any case, Valve is working on SteamOS support for other portable devices, but there is still no date for when we will see the operating system arrive on these devices. It could be something we see in a month, a year or even never.
