The increasingly restricted US rules in China’s technology trade can soon reach older machinery and affect three foreign companies: Samsung, SK Hynix and TSMC.

The information is not yet official and comes from Reuters sources, which are close to the matter. Apparently, Oo Bureau de Industry and Security (Bis) of the US Department of Commerce, considers it to prevent the authorization that companies in the country have to sell machinery for facilities of Samsung, SK Hynix and TSMC in China.

The three giants of technology have factories in the Asian country that produce less advanced mature chips and matters of mature processes. Thus, they buy the simplest machinery from US companies, such as Lam Research and Kla Corp.

Currently, these US companies are allowed to offer this equipment, but this authorization may be suspended depending on US and China export negotiations.

New restrictions depend on the rare minerals in China

According to information from Reuters, the idea of suspending this authorization to equipment that will end up in China is part of the US negotiating tools.

Currently the country’s priority is to ensure the receipt of rare Chinese minerals, so its authorities seek means of pressuring economic rivals if necessary. “It’s another tool we want in our box in the event that this agreement doesn’t work, or any other catalyst throw an English key in bilateral relations,” said one of the officers involved for Reuters.

There is also the concern of encouraging local industry in new sanctions

US officials would not be so willing to follow the path of these new restrictions for fear of once again encouraging the advance in the development of local technologies by China.

As it is a machinery for mature processes, this concern becomes greater, as there is less difficulty in development by local companies.

In addition, the sanction would be a hard blow to the revenue of US companies that currently sell to Samsung, TSMC and SK Hynix. Actions of KLA Corp, Lam Research and Applied Materials have already fallen only by the circulation of information about the possibility of restrictions happened.
