The US Department of Energy has announced that it is working with Dell and Nvidia in creating a new supercomputer named Doudna. The system will be used in scientific research, focusing on flexible use for various users and AI processing in its operations.
Doudna is named after Jennifer Doudna, winner of the Nobel Prize for her work in molecular biology, more precisely in edition of CRISPR genes.

Dell highlights as a highlight of its new computer the flexibility of use, allowing different precision levels for different work demands. Historically, supercomputers prioritized maximum precision calculations, but modern AI resources benefit higher processing speeds, enabled by less accurate operations.
Doudna will be installed at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, where it should be used by over 11,000 scientists when it becomes completely operational in 2026.
Vera Rubin enhances Doudna
While the supercomputer honors a scientist, the GPUs who drive their work mention another. Doudna will be equipped with Nvidia’s Vera Rubin generation accelerators.
Abandoning Intel or AMD processors, which previous computers of the Energy Department used, Doudna bets on an NVIDIA’s own ARM CPU, with the GPUs responsible for most AI processing.

“Doudna is a time machine for science: compressing years of discoveries in days,” said Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia. “Scientists will dive deeper and think greater to find the fundamental truths of the universe.”
Scientists across the country will have access to the supercomputer
Public investment in the creation of Doudna helps to be justified because the range of the supercomputer will not be restricted to the laboratory where it will be installed.
Representatives of the Energy Department explain that the system will be integrated into the energy science network, allowing researchers throughout the US territory to enjoy the supercomputer. They will be able to send data through the network and get real -time analysis using the new hardware.
