Japan and South Korea are the targets of the time in the rise of US import taxes. The Trump administration released this week a new 25% rate on any and all product from any of these countries. This is a standard rate on all items, which will be added to any other tariffs that already exist for specific products.
The information is official and the US president has already sent formal letters to the leaders of Japan and South Korea, Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru and President Lee Jae-Myung, respectively. The 25% rate will be applied to all countries from the countries from August 1, and any retaliation measure will cause even more taxes – as with China happened.
Memories segment will be affected by the new tariff
When it comes to products from South Korea and Japan, there are a wide variety of technology items and all types of electronics. One of the main ones are components for memory.
Two of the largest companies in the world in the memory segment – SK Hynix and Samsung – are Korean. Not only that, Micron, which is from the US, manufactures some of its components in South Korea as well. Then the price increases in DRAM, Nand and, consequently, HBM, should be felt soon.
The country also exports many OLED and LCD displays, as well as cell phones, televisions and batteries.
Going to Japan, it also owes an impact on the importation of Nand 3D modules, as well as equipment for the manufacture of automotive chips and sensors – that was the vehicles themselves.
Tax will also be applied in attempts to “re-export”
The US government wants to ensure that its new tariff in products from Japan and South Korea is not circumvented by re-export attempts. It is common for countries to try to avoid heavy taxes by sending their products to other regions with milder rates and labeling them as if they had been produced there.
The determination of the new taxes stipulates that products will be tracked to its point of origin for the 25%tariff.

However, according to Tom’s hardware, the US Constitution establishes that the country of origin of a product is determined where it has undergone its “most significant transformation.” So it remains to be seen how this standard will be interpreted to ensure the collection of heavy new taxes.
