Quinas Technology, formed by the British company IQE and the Universities of Lancaster and Cardiff, has received a significant financial boost to advance its UltraRAM research. The UK government, through Innovate UK, has invested £1.1 million in the project, to advance efforts to mass produce the technology.

The amount is equivalent to a little over R$7.75 million. IQE, responsible for the actual manufacturing of the components, will receive the majority of the financing. The company will need to create a manufacturing capacity for special semiconductors that it does not currently have.

The research industrialization project is expected to last one year. The initial idea is to increase the scale of the UltraRAM wafer diameter, which currently reaches 3” in Lancaster. The goal is to double this size to 6” at IQE.

“Our central role will be to characterize the antimony composite material made at IQE, and once sufficient quality is confirmed, we will manufacture and test UltraRAM memory on small areas of IQE wafers,” said Manus Hayne, a professor at Lancaster University and one of the creators of the technology.

He adds: “In parallel to this, Lancaster will continue to work on scaling UltraRAM, reducing the size of individual devices and making arrays ever larger.”

UltraRAM’s road to mass production is still long

The Quinas organization will use its government investment to move towards mass production, but we are not that close to that happening yet.

The processes described by Hayne aim to achieve a specific size for UltraRAM before its “industrialization”. This is what the researchers will work on over the next year, with the scientist concluding:

“Once the devices are small enough, and the arrays are large enough, the next stage will be to demonstrate fabrication on a full 8” wafer, and then translate the process to something industrial, suitable for a semiconductor fab.”

For those who don’t remember, the great advantage of UltraRAM technology is to create a high-speed, durable and efficient solution, but without the volatility of traditional RAM. We explained in detail when the feature was first announced, check it out here.
