The startup Ubitium is attracting attention with the promise of a new “universal processor”. According to the company, the chip it is working on can act as a CPU or GPU in data processing, without using different components specialized in each process. Each of the transistors in the Ubitium processor can be used in any task.
“The $500 billion processor industry is built on restrictive boundaries between computational tasks. We are erasing these limits”, says Hyun Shin Cho, CEO of the company. “Our universal processor does it all – CPU, GPU, DSP, FPGA – on one chip, one architecture. This is not an incremental improvement. It’s a paradigm shift. This is the processor architecture that the AI era demands.”
The mysterious processor’s “agnostic microarchitecture” is based on RISC-V, and the processor acts like an FPGA. This type of component can be reprogrammed to change the focus of its functionality, to the detriment of the performance found in cores made in a specialized way for different processes.
That’s why Ubitium says its processor is “smaller, more power efficient and significantly less expensive” than a traditional FPGA. To help the credibility of its work, the company highlights that it has talent from veterans from companies such as Intel, NVIDIA and Texas Instruments.
Ubitium says its processor will arrive in 2026
Of all the ambitious promises made by Ubitium, possibly the one that attracts the most attention is the launch timeline for its RISC-V processor: two years from now. The company says it plans the first universal chips for 2026
It’s a launch window that would be challenging even for some of the biggest semiconductor developers in the world. Meanwhile, Ubitium revealed that it raised US$3.7 million in an initial round of investment.

It’s certainly not a little money, but to “change the paradigms” of a US$500 billion industry, the company will probably need to find more investors before its new processor becomes a reality.
