Instagram is an application that is always renewing itself and bringing new features to make the experience increasingly interactive and dynamic. One of the most recent news was the arrival of temporary notes, which are already invading various parts of the social network.
Currently, it is possible to leave short, floating messages in posts in the feed, Reels and in the direct messages (DMs) tab. Although it is a creative form of interaction, not everyone likes the fact that the feature often causes posts from unknown accounts to appear in the feed.
Fortunately, Instagram offers ways to disable this feature. Here is a complete guide to help you mute friends’ temporary notes on Instagram.

What are temporary notes?
Temporary notes are floating comments that can be made on feed posts, Reels videos and even in Direct. These comments have an expiration date, which means they automatically expire after this period, but they can also be manually deleted if necessary.
The most annoying part of this is that the Instagram algorithm, in addition to showing these notes to friends and followers, can also use them to bring posts from unknown accounts to your feed, if someone you follow has interacted with them. This behavior, for some, makes browsing the feed less relevant or more confusing.
How to disable temporary notes in posts and Reels?
If you want to hide notes left by friends on your feed posts or Reels videos, follow these steps:
- Access the person’s profile: Open Instagram and go to the profile of the user whose notes you want to disable.
- Tap “Following”: At the top of the profile, click the “Following” button next to the username.
- Select “Mute”: In the menu that appears, click on “Mute”.
- Check the option “Notes in publications and Reels”: Enable this option to stop seeing that person’s temporary notes on posts and videos.
If you also want to hide the temporary notes that appear at the top of the direct messages tab, you can also select the option “Notes” which is above “Notes in publications and Reels”.
The other person will not be notified that you performed this action, and you will still be able to view their other interactions normally, if you have not muted them too.
How do I know if a post appeared in the feed via a note?
If you notice that a post from an unknown account has appeared in your feed and want to know why, that’s also possible. Just open the post, tap the three dots next to the account name and select the “Why are you seeing this post” option:
Instagram will show an explanation of the factors that influenced the display of that post, such as friend interactions or topics you liked.
