TSMC has become the eighth publicly traded company in the world to reach a market value of $1 trillion. The above-average share price surge lasted only briefly before the company has now fallen back to the $800 billion range.
TechSpot reports that TSMC’s turnaround is partly due to a recent analysis by JP Morgan, which pointed to growth trends for the chipmaker. This would have helped in a 4.8% increase in the Taiwanese company’s shares on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), resulting in the company’s total value reaching $1 trillion.
Another important factor for TSMC’s success is the rumor mill’s rumors that the company will begin testing its 2nm manufacturing process next week. The company is expected to supply chips from this lithography to Apple for use in its A19 processors for the iPhone 17. The process is also expected to appear in the M5, for the next-generation Macs.
The partnership with Apple on a new, more advanced generation of chips is a boost to the value of any company. Thus, the Taiwanese manufacturer remains well positioned even after falling out of the “trillion club”.
Over the past 12 months, TSMC has seen its shares rise by more than 50%, driven by high demand for AI chips. Nvidia, which reigns supreme in the segment, is one of the manufacturer’s main customers.
TSMC in the race for 2nm
Semiconductor manufacturers are always racing to stand out in increasingly advanced processes. One of TSMC’s main competitors to reach 2nm is Samsung.
While the Taiwanese giant is expected to focus on its partnership with Apple to enter the next generation of lithography processes, Samsung has just announced a new Japanese partner. The South Korean company is betting on its GAA process, and hopes that the order from Preferred Networks will help promote the advantages of this technology.
But it’s important to pay attention to product marketing when comparing processes. It wasn’t long ago that Samsung surprised everyone by simply calling a new version of its 3nm process 2nm. Confusion can also be a strategy.
