A few days after the head of TSMC stated that the demand for advanced chips is at least three times greater than what the company is capable of producing, we have rumors that three new factories are planned in Taiwan to create 2nm chips. The investment, according to Liberty Times, will reach NT$900 billion, which is equivalent to more or less US$28 billion, or more than R$150 billion.
If the information is confirmed, TSMC shows that it is betting on maintaining its dominance in the high-end chip segment, where the company has basically operated alone in recent years. There is information that seven 2nm factories were already planned for its homeland – two in Hsinchu and another five in Kaohsiung. If the rumor is confirmed, the company will bring the total number of 2nm installations in Taiwan to 10.

It’s an impressive number, even more so considering that the company has also expanded its operations in other countries and intends to work with 2nm in the USA as well. In this case, TSMC still needs to comply with Taiwanese law that prevents the production of its most advanced processes abroad, but it seems that very soon 2nm will no longer be the most complex thing the company has to offer.
TSMC is already preparing to manufacture 1.4nm chips
While expanding its 2nm production capacity at scale, TSMC maintains an accelerated future generation roadmap to remain the only choice for the world’s most advanced chips. The semiconductor maker intends to start offering 1.6nm as soon as next year, and construction for its first 1.4nm-capable facility has reportedly begun.

What draws the most attention in this case are the exponential costs for more advanced lithography processes. The current rumor indicates that the company will need to invest US$28 billion for three new 2nm factories. Its first 1.4nm factory alone will cost almost US$50 billion. Mass production at this facility is expected to begin in the second half of 2028.
