TSMC opens its first center for chip design in Europe

TSMC has announced the creation of its first chip design center in Europe, more precisely in Munich, Germany. The world’s largest semiconductor manufacturer will use installation to help your customers on the continent optimize their designs for manufacturing by the Taiwanese company.

There are already nine other centers such in countries like US, Canada, China, Japan and, of course, Taiwan. The tenth center marks the first installation in Europe and will offer assistance in the development of microcontrollers that TSMC will use in the manufacture of chips by ordering from its customers.

“We want to bring the best customer support in Europe,” said Kevin Zhang, TSMC executive. “Here, we want the design team to be able to work directly with the customer under our factory here, so that we can create a bridge between product design and manufacturing. We often use the term DTCO-design technology optimization-so that’s what we will do in Munich.”

It is interesting to remember that TSMC is already building a new factory in Europe, which will focus on the company’s mature processes N12 and N16. This installation should not be confused with the new design center, which will work on chip optimization before its manufacture is started.

“It’s not like we could take technology there and you can make it for the rest of our lives,” explained Zhang. “This doesn’t work this way. You need to work closely with your end consumer to continue making improvements. So, having a design team right here in the heart of European land, we can leave the customer and closer manufacturing technology.”
