In the last hours of 2025, TSMC finally made the official announcement that it had begun mass production of chips using the 2nm process. Despite the timing of the announcement, the start of manufacturing is still within the roadmap of the largest semiconductor manufacturer in the world, which maintains its leadership position in the segment.
Volume production of 2nm chips begins at Kaohsiung facility in Taiwan. TSMC’s so-called Fab 22 will use 300mm wafers of first-generation nanosheet transistors, a technology the company calls N2.

According to Focus Taiwan, TSMC updated its website in its native language with the reveal of mass production, which is not a very prominent announcement. In the update, the company mainly highlights the improved efficiency of the N2 process, to “meet the growing need for energy-efficient computing”. Of course, the company is referring to the explosive demand for AI processing.
On another occasion, the chipmaker promised that its components manufactured in 2nm will have 10% to 15% more performance than those manufactured in 3nm (N3E). The comparison is for the same energy consumption. Putting the chips at the same performance, 2nm chips use 25% to 30% less energy.
2nm prices do not appear to affect demand for TSMC
The phenomenon of the race for generative AI is interesting because it intensifies demand for advanced, quality chips capable of processing technology in the way it needs. Thus, components that would already be expensive become even more expensive, but the industry does not seem to be slowing down, because none of the giants wants to be left behind in an apparently transformative moment.

That’s why, even with forecasts of continued price increases in its most high-end processes, TSMC continues to have more demand than it can supply. It is no surprise that the company has plans to expand a lot around the world, creating more facilities and readjusting many of them to manufacture more modern processes.
