Construction of TSMC’s factory in Dresden, Germany, may have been brought forward and rumors suggest it will begin in the coming weeks.

Initially, the forecast was to start work only in the fourth quarter of 2024, but the plans may have changed as several sources point out. It is worth noting that the main semiconductor manufacturer has not yet commented on the incident.

In other words, TSMC has yet to announce an official date for the inauguration ceremony of the site where the works will be carried out or when they will start building the new factory in Germany. However, the same rumors indicate that President and CEO CC Wei will be in the country at the end of August to sign the documents.

Despite an early start, the deadline for its completion is unlikely to be changed and the forecast – at least for now – continues to be for its operations to begin only in 2027. Furthermore, it is worth noting that it will not be focused on cutting-edge technology, but rather for the purpose of supplying components for the automotive industry in Europe.

According to TSMC, the factory in Germany should be focused on two different technology processes – one focused on CMOS nodes between 28nm and 22nm and another on FinFET nodes, which will be produced between 16nm and 12nm.

TSMC’s expectations in Germany

As mentioned above, TSMC plans to use its German plant to focus on supplying a range of technological components to the European automotive industry. Its Dresden facility is expected to produce 40,000 12-inch wafers per month.

The manufacturer’s investment in the site will be approximately 10 billion euros, while the municipal government is expected to invest an additional 250 million euros for the works, helping with the water supply system and improvements to energy consumption.

Furthermore, TSMC will not be the only one using the German factory. Companies such as Infineon, Robert Bosch and NXP each have a 10% stake, also carrying out operations within their facilities.
