TSMC executive says that construction of factories in the US will be faster

TSMC is confident that building its upcoming US factories will not take as long as the first module of its FAB 21 in Arizona. Company representatives talked to Japanese media Nikkei and said they learned from the FAB 21 experience how to accelerate the implementation of their facilities, and should start raising the third module of the factory later this year.

It took almost five years to build FAB 21, against the average two years to do a similar installation on TSMC homeland Taiwan. High costs, labor difficulties and differences in the work culture between executives in one country and workers from another are among the reasons that “delayed” construction. But TSMC faces everything as learning.

“After a painful learning curve, we finally connect most of the points and know which construction contractors we can work to make new plants,” said one of TSMC executives for Nikkei.

At the moment, TSMC is still finishing the installation of equipment in the first module of FAB 21, and should move to module 2 soon. If the company actually starts the construction of module 3 this year, it will be an anticipation of its roadmap.

Accelerate factories construction not only depends on TSMC

It is noteworthy that it is not just TSMC’s know-how that determines how long it takes the company to build a new factory-especially when we talk about advanced chips, as in the 2NM process.
